The Pepperoni Paradox: Parenting a Five-Year-Old with Logic of Her Own

In our household, cheese pizza is not an option. I firmly believe kids should have at least a meat or vegetable on their pizza—something beyond just bread and cheese. So every time we order, we ask our children what toppings they’d like.

Without fail, my sweet five-year-old is the first to shout, “Pepperoni!”

Majority rules, of course, so the kids usually get a pepperoni pizza while my husband and I order a supreme for ourselves. But over time, we started to notice something strange: as our dear five-year-old ate her pizza, she carefully pulled every single piece of pepperoni off.

Finally, one day my husband asked the obvious question:
“Sweetheart, why do you always ask for pepperoni if you don’t eat it?”

Her response?
“Well Daddy, I don’t like pepperoni. I order it because if we get pizza with all that other stuff on it, there’s just more for me to pull off.”

And that, my friends, is how the mind of our feisty and fabulous five-year-old works.

Wish me luck when she’s a teenager.
