The Joy of Parenting

My husband repainted our bedroom for my birthday.  The light pumpkin color he chose gave the room a whole new look.  The moment I saw the walls,  I became giddy inside dreaming of the changes I could make to our mismatched room.   I dreamed of creating a relaxing, retreat style bedroom - one with silky sheets, mounds of colorful pillows, and a  duvet cover to match. I figured with our children out of the baby stage of spitting up and so forth, it would finally be safe to invest  some time and money into our bedroom . . . at least that is what I thought.

The other evening after a restless night of sleep, I was beginning to doze off when I heard the shuffling of little feet run in to my room.  My sleepy five year old daughter crawled into our bed and wedged herself between my husband and I.  Too delirious to care, I began fading back into my deep sleep, that is, until I heard the sound of vomiting.  I immediately informed my half asleep husband of what I thought just happend.  He lifted his head up from his pillow and confirmed that our sweet daughter just threw up in our bed.

We moved quickly.  My husband picked up my daughter from the bed and carefully placed her near the toilet, in case she needed to vomit again.  I quickly removed the sheets from our bed before the  aroma of vomit filled our room.  Assuming I had more sheets to wash, I asked Natalie if she threw up in her bed.   She proudly answered, "no".   She claimed she felt like she had to throw up so she came into our bed.  My  husband jokingly thanked  her for being so considerate as to wait until our bed to vomit.

Needless to say, my  bed room retreat may not be as dreamy as I had originally planned.  I may have to make a few modifications to make it kid compatible - like everything else in my home.  But someday in my distant future I know that I will have my ideal bedroom with silky sheets and a bed with fancy pillows.   And when that day comes, as my husband and I drift off into our deep sleep, I guarantee we will miss the sound of the pitter pattering of little feet running into our room and children jumping into our bed - even if it is just to throw up.
